Serving the Children as a Volunteer

Serving the Children as a Volunteer

by: Hannah H. Kinzer

Each time I visit the House of Refuge Foundation Inc. (HORFI), I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the warmth and care that radiates from this remarkable community. There’s an undeniable sense of family here, where everyone supports one another in ways that are both uplifting and inspiring. I’ve learned so much during my time at HORFI, and each visit brings new insights and experiences. From the dedicated social workers, I’ve gained invaluable knowledge about the adoption process understanding the patience, diligence, and compassion that drive their work. It’s deeply moving to witness their commitment to helping children find safe and loving homes. The children themselves teach me so much, too, sharing stories of their school experiences, teaching me Filipino words and phrases, and introducing me to aspects of popular culture in the Philippines.

Their enthusiasm is contagious, and I cherish every conversation, game, and moment spent in their company. The HORFI cook has also generously shared traditional Filipino dishes with me, introducing me to flavors and techniques I never knew before; learning to prepare these dishes has been a highlight of my time here, and I feel more connected to Filipino culture with each recipe. My experience volunteering at HORFI this summer has been incredibly fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunity to support this organization, and I look forward to contributing more in the future, knowing that I am part of a community that truly cares for one another.
